Over the past few years I’ve noticed that people are finally starting to talk more openly about mental health issues. There are more campaigns, more awareness and more people coming forward to admit their struggles.
Is there still a stigma that overshadows those with mental health issues? Yes.
Are people with mental health issues still misunderstood? Yes.
Do people with mental health issues still struggle to find the help they so desperately need? Yes.
When someone is physically hurt or sick, they receive treatment, medication and well wishes to recover. Why are mental health issues viewed differently than those associated with other parts of the body? Why shouldn’t someone with depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder receive the same level of treatment and support that someone with a broken arm, cut foot or pneumonia would receive?
How do we change this?
Realize that within your circle of family, friends, neighbours and coworkers there’s a good chance there’s one or more people dealing with mental health issues—and this stigma. These are people you care about, if they had a physical illness anywhere else in their body, you’d want them to get the help they need to get better. Listen to them without judgement and be open yourself. Help them get the support and treatment they need. Support campaigns, people and companies that provide further research, information and assistance. Speak up yourself. Educate yourself and be an advocate for ending the stigma. Let’s keep talking, learning, supporting and teaching.
As a Mercedes-Benz Oakville 10K race ambassador, I was provided a free race entry for a friend.
Wanna be my friend? Ha ha!
I decided to make the race entry available to someone in this amazing running community. How do you get a chance to grab it? Simply comment below by midnight EST TODAY (Tuesday, April 19, 2016) and let me know why you really want to run this race! I will chose a comment at random on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 to receive entry to the race. Chances are pretty good given the 12 hour deadline!
